The Phrog Story

The 2018 Nursery Trends Forecast

For a third world country in laid back Africa, we sure know how to create beautiful spaces for our little ones. We find South African moms are wonderfully creative and add their own local flair to current trends.

2018 will not disappoint and there are some exciting, inspirational forecasts in store.

The Colours…

2017’s colour trends were centred around muted, natural tones. We saw soft greys, beiges and pastels a plenty used in our clients nurseries. We loved the 2017 Pantone Colour of the year “Greenery” and found it commonly featured in the form of botanical themes.

With the exciting announcement of Ultra Violet as 2018’s Pantone Colour of the Year we expect to see more vibrant colours introduced into nurseries. These will likely include pops of golden yellows, bolder greens, greys, deep blues and of course a spectrum of purple hues – particularly lavender.

The Themes…

In 2018 we will see many parents inclined to forgo the “theme specific” nursery and stray from juvenile designs towards something more mature and adaptable. Despite this decline in “themed spaces” we do expect to see some of the strong 2017 trends still featuring. Think bohemian, adventurer, destination (tropics/woodland/beach) and the contemporary art themes.

The Furniture…

Nursery furniture design remains largely influenced by Scandinavian interiors and products. As for Phrog, we love the Scandinavian brand, Stokke. Their high-quality furniture is stylish, adaptable and grows with your little one from birth.

The Finishes…

Popular textures, patterns and motifs projected for 2018 include metallics, velvet, oversized florals, buffalo check, fabulous birds (flamingos, swans and peacocks), tropical, hand drawn polka-dots and bears. These can be bought in with small metallic elements like picture frames or a vase. A velvet covered feeding chair with deep button detailing will add a luxurious texture and a classic feel to the room (watch this space Phrog Fans). Incorporate birds by hanging a beautiful flamingo or swan mobile above the cot or the display of soft toys from the Jellycat 2018 range – the Fancy Flamingo is our firm favourite. We would love to see buffalo check introduced through a wallpaper feature wall, cot linen sets, scatters or a feeding cushion. Why not try your creative hand at some black, watercolour hand drawn polka dots, remember less is more and a bit of mess is fine.

The Nursery Nook

Nursery nooks in master bedrooms are a new and exciting trend emerging this year. Whether for lack of space, funds, or just personal preference, parents around the globe are converting  corners of their master bedrooms into a very stylish nursery nook for their babes. We love this trend because, as suggested by the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP), it is best for baby to sleep in Mom’s room for at least the first few months.

Bumpers are out!

Bumpers are on the decline this year so we expect parents will opt for bolder cot sheets. These are doubling up as an adorable backdrop for those Instagram worthy snaps.  This is a great way of incorporating a specific look such as the tropical trend – the “Bananas for you” Sleepyhead cover is a great example.

Made with love

We believe that handmade items transfer warmth and soul to their environment, so we love the hand lettered wall sign trend that is stirring up. Originally a popular home accent, hand lettered signs are now a beautiful, personal feature in nurseries. Pick your favourite saying, quote or even your baby’s name and get creative on a canvas or perhaps chalk paints on wood. You can mount it as the feature above the cot or place it on a shelf for a more subtle accent.

The nursery is as much your space as your baby’s, so take trendy ideas and advice as your starting point; create a space that is comfortable and appealing for both of you.

Much love
