When my son Ilias was born in 2006, I searched unsuccessfully for an alternative to the blanket, the cot, and the baby lounger,” says Lisa. “I craved something more snug and at the same time more versatile.

Sleepyhead® has recently collaborated with Swedish designer Miss Mighetto to bring you a limited edition covers and the result is breathtakingly beautiful…

Today, Sleepyhead® is sold around the globe at top retailers including Harrods and John Lewis. The product is also distributed under the DockATot™ brand name in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Australia. With headquarters located in Norrtälje (a lovely small seaside town, 70 km north of Stockholm), the Sleepyhead® brand continues to grow and expand.

The Sleepyhead story in South Africa started with a Durban mom, Lauren Stockil.  After being blessed with her first daughter in July 2015, Lauren took the leap of faith and left the corporate finance world with the vision to create an environment where she could pursue both a career and “hands on” motherhood.  She set up a professional advisory consultancy serving both new and existing clients but clearly more was in store!

Her passion for the product has resulted in these award-winning pods being brought to South African shores, and our team at Phrog Designs are thrilled to be able to showcase the full Sleepyhead range in our store.

I was given a Sleepyhead® as a gift before I had my little girl, Holly. It was a recommendation from a friend who is a maternity nurse in the UK and it has been by far the most incredible product I have ever used.” says Lauren. “I was marketing the product without even trying, literally just by using it, friends and family could see how amazing and functional it was.

What can you do this World Breastfeeding Week?

1st – 8th August 2017

Breastfeeding at work – Lets make it work! As family and a community, we can support the healthy development of the next generation.

Many studies and much publicity have discussed the multitude of benefits to Breastfeeding for the first 6 months of a baby’s life.  Studies suggest that we know Breastfeeding is important, 61-88% of South African babies start on breast milk. But why do we have the lowest exclusive Breast Feeding rates in the world? The 2013 SANHANE survey reported only 8% of babies achieve the recommendation of exclusive Breastfeeding until 6 months of age; fortunately more recent studies suggest this figure is rising.

Going back to work is a necessity for the majority of South African mothers. Work may be a formal position in a company, your own business or family responsibilities.

“The first 3 months of my little one’s life rushed by so quickly. I had managed to establish a good Breastfeeding routine, but then I had to return to work! I was fortunate to be able to return gradually, on a part time basis, but I still felt exhausted and ran out of hours in the day. Finding time to sit in a relaxed atmosphere to effectively express milk was difficult and by 4 months I was battling.”

As an employer or co-worker you can help.

Please give enough maternity leave for mums to get Breastfeeding established. Pregnant workers are entitled to at least 4 consecutive months of maternity leave. Workers may not go back to work within 6 weeks after birth unless their doctor of midwife agree it is safe (section 25, of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act).

The Law also supports breastfeeding mothers in their code of Good Practice. “Arrangements should be made for employees who are breastfeeding to have breaks for 30 minutes twice per day for breastfeeding or expressing milk each working day for the first six months of the child’s life”.

Have a discussion about where may be a suitable place to breastfeed or express and store milk. A relaxed and private environment will help reduce the time feeding or expressing takes. The Bathroom or car should not be the solution.

In return, the commitment made toward supporting female employees to Breastfeed will help you to:

  • Retain your valued and experienced staff.
  • Have more productive and less stressed staff who are better able to carry their workload.
  • Reduce additional leave requests as Breastfeeding protects both mum and baby against many illnesses and infections.

This World Breast Feeding week we can all take positive actions to encourage and support breastfeeding.

Much love

Natalie

The Co-Sleeper

If I could choose any cot, it would be a co-sleeper cot.

I love using the gentle sleep solutions, which teaches the baby to sleep in their own space at night in a nurturing way. I also love the closeness of breastfeeding.

A wonderful way of doing night feeds, is if mom can lie down and cradle their baby. Mom can remain in a sleepy state and can enjoy those lovely endorphins released from breastfeeding.  Her sleep is not badly interrupted because after feeding, she doesn’t need to get up, but can just shift baby across into the cot.

As a mommy of two, I personally can’t sleep with a baby in my bed as I would constantly worry that they would fall out or be squashed. I always put my baby back into the cot, but a co sleeper would have been ideal in that one wouldn’t even need to stand up.

I love the the Cozi Cot, a fully height adjustable Co-Sleeper and stand alone cot. The cozi Cot is available at Phrog Designs. https://www.phrogdesigns.co.za/product/cozi-cot/

If from early, you can teach your baby to sleep in their own space with the aid of a sleep association like a ‘blankie’ or key words like ‘shhh’ or ‘doo doo’, they start to sleep longer stretches at night and can be comforted by the sound of your voice.

Sometimes babies that have ‘co-slept’ in the same bed as their parents, start waking up hourly when they are a year old, thinking that the kitchen is open the whole night. So it is best to start these sleep solutions early to try to prevent this.

This way you can enjoy your own space, but still have that close proximity for reassurance and nurturing parenting.

Happy parenting. Xx

Love

The truth About Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces

There is a lot of controversy around what these are and how they help, so we thought we would share what we know about our Amber teething necklaces.

What is Amber?

Genuine Baltic Amber is formed from the fossilized resin of plants such as conifers and angiosperms. It is otherwise known as succinite as it contains 3-8% succinic acid, recognized by allopathic medicine as a therapeutic substance. The colour varies from white, to yellow or brown, and amber can even be found in red, black, blue or green shades. Dark flecks within the amber are bits of insects, plants, flowers or feather caught in the resin of the tree when it was still soft and these inclusions add character. Even though amber is sometimes referred to as a gemstone, as mentioned before, it is actually fossilized tree sap and is therefore lighter and warmer to the touch than stone.

How does it work?

Amber works best when in direct contact with the wearer’s skin. Amber releases trace amounts of succinic acid containing oil into the skin as it heats up due to body heat. These oils then enter the bloodstream through being absorbed into the skin.

Recognized as having many therapeutic properties. These include:

  • anti-inflammatory
  • calmative
  • analgesic
  • anti-spasmodic
  • expectorant
  • anti-pyretic

Other benefits of amber:

  • It boosts the immune system
  • It is said to help protect the body from radiation
  • It can aid in treating bacterial infections
  • It aids the body in the detoxification process
  • It supports tissue regeneration

Furthermore, amber is electromagnetically alive – the ancient Greeks discovered this and their name for amber was electron, the word we get ‘electricity’ from. It produces negative ionization on the surface of the skin and this electro-negativity helps to prevent illness.

We stock genuine amber teething necklaces which has a safety release clasp.

Sheepskins- a baby’s essential!

We are very proud to be able to stock Jardineria’s beautiful and luxurious sheepskins.

Jardineria’s sheepskins are made from African Merino sheep- the best sheepskin in the world and renowned for its powerful benefits that help calm and nurture babies. We have researched and found what we consider to be the softest and silkiest sheepskins available.

Moms will love that sheepskin is made by nature and is far superior to baby’s well being than any synthetic fibres. Sheepskins, unlike synthetics (eg. polar fleece)

  • breathes
  • never smells
  • is flame retardant
  • has excellent insulating properties

Besides being the most luxurious play mat or bedding your baby will ever lie on, it has some incredible natural properties swell.

Firstly it is dirt and bacteria resistant and has self cleaning properties due to its lanolin content. It resists dirt and bacteria, never holds onto odours and is considered hypoallergenic. It is also very easy to clean and can be machine washed or for smaller stains- simply wiped down with a sponge and gentle detergent.

It is temperature regulating, meaning it keeps baby warm in Winter and cool in Summer, helping your baby maintain a stable body temperature. It may seem strange to use a sheepskin in Summer, but it really doesn’t get hot and actually has a cooling effect.

Our sheepskins are soothing and healing and perfect for babies with sensitive skin or prone to eczema.

For your baby, lying on a sheepskin is like lying on a cloud. Its soft, dense, ‘springy’ fibres ensure your baby sleeps in extreme comfort or has the perfect playmat. Tummy time on a sheepskin ensure baby is kept comfortable and won’t rash her soft skin.

Sheepkins are kind to the environment as they are 100% biodegradable. They are also a by product of the meat industry, meaning no animal is killed specifically for its skin.

Your sheepskin may be used on the floor as a rug or playmat, placed in baby’s cot for sleeping on, used in a stroller or over a rocking chair in the nursery.

If cared for properly it can be reused for years to come and won’t loose its nurturing and healing benefits.

It is important to note, that as sheepskin is a natural product, no two skins will be the same in size or shape, but quality will always be maintained.
