Hi Mama and welcome to this month’s blog post where we are diving deep into all things skin during pregnancy! Yes pregnancy is the one of the most significant and exciting times in your life yet rather daunting if it is your first time. Many changes will occur in your body during pregnancy and although these are all NATURAL, they can cause many moms to become unhappy with what their bodies look like after these changes. When we say changes, we are talking stretch marks, dry skin, cellulite, swollen legs and more.
To learn more about these and how to address them in the most natural and beneficial way possible we sat down to chat with Natralogics skincare developer, Lauren Lamont who is highly qualified and gave us some pro tips on treating or avoiding these skincare issues:
1. Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a very common and dreaded side effect of pregnancy and as many as 9 out of 10 pregnant women get them! Keeping your skin adequately hydrated is proven to reduce the risk of stretch mark formation. Use hydrating skincare products such as creams and lotions rich in humectants, natural moisturising factors, emollients and occlusive ingredients that will boost your skin’s hydration. We don’t recommend the use of oil-based products like mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum or liquid paraffin) as they increase rapid hydration, but it is only a ‘quick fix’ as within three hours the skin’s composition appears unbalanced. Considering our skin barrier composition, we need to remember we need both oils and water in order to hydrate the skin efficiently. Exfoliation is also vital in preventing stretch marks for several reasons. Firstly, it aids in the removal of dead skin cells which improves the penetration of hydrating and active ingredients. Secondly, it stimulates the cell turnover rate, thereby accelerating the skin’s regeneration capacity and boosting the natural repair processes of the skin. Lastly, exfoliation increases the circulation of blood in the area which improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to the cells, allowing enhanced wound repair and tissue growth. A solution found to be very effective is Natralogic Tummy Crème and Natralogic Exfoliating Crème.
2. Swollen legs and feet
During pregnancy the volume of water your body retains increases by 6 to 8 liters as the pregnancy progresses, this excess fluid may accumulate in tissues causing them to swell and appear puffy. This condition also called edema, is common during pregnancy with 8 out of 10 women have demonstrable clinical edema at some stage of their pregnancy. This can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as pain, night cramps, numbness, tingling, and heavy legs. A great way to reduce edema is to massage your legs regularly with products that contain active ingredients that have circulatory, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, cooling and healing properties. An excellent active ingredient to look out for is Legactif. This is an innovative complex of plant active ingredients that relieve tired and heavy legs due to improvements in blood circulation and reduction of swelling, providing calming, decongestant and anti-fatigue effects. Use Natralogic Cooling Leg Gel for this condition.
Pregnancy is the perfect storm for cellulite formation since all the formation mechanisms are working at the same time. While age, hereditary and weight are all contributing factors, there are steps you can follow to minimize the formation of cellulite during pregnancy. One great way is to massage your skin with topical active ingredients that have been proven to improve the appearance of cellulite. A great ingredient is centella asiatica. This ingredient normalizes the metabolism occurring in the cells of the connective tissue. It also shows anti-inflammatory and draining activity and regulates microcirculation. Studies have clearly shown a beneficial effect of the centella asiatica extract on inhibiting the progression of cellulite and a significant improvement in the skin condition in 85% of the trial participants. The Natralogic Solution is Natraloci Toning Massage Oil.
4. Sore nipples from breastfeeding
Sore nipples are the bane of breastfeeding mothers. Nipple pain and/or damage results in one of the first reasons for early discontinuation of breastfeeding. It is crucial to manage the pain from feed to feed and expediting healing should be a priority. When sore nipples are not attended to quickly, tissue breakdown can progress rapidly and, in some cases, nipple injury can be extensive. Moist wound healing is the most recommended method of treatment for wounds, including sore and damaged nipples. Purified Lanolin is recommended to promote moist wound healing for Stage 1 (superficial trauma, no broken skin) and Stage 2 (superficial with some tissue breakdown) nipple trauma. It can also be used early on in breastfeeding to prevent cracks or damage from occurring due to excessive friction. Natralogic Nipple Crème will aid.
